OBJECTIVE:
To lay down the procedure for receipt, usage and storage of laboratory chemicals, reagents and primary standards.
SCOPE:
This procedure is applicable for the receipt, usage and storage of laboratory chemicals in Quality Control Laboratory.
RESPONSIBILITY:
Quality Control Officer/Executive is responsible to follow procedure as per the procedure mentioned in this SOP.
QC Head is responsible for implementation and compliance of the procedure as per this SOP.

PROCEDURE:
All the Chemicals shall be procured only from a reputed and reliable vendor.
At the time of receipt, check the following details on the label - Name of the chemical, Batch No./Lot No, Manufactures Name, Grade, Qty, seal intactness, label condition, storage condition and hazardous symbol.
All the reagents on receipt shall be entered in the Stock Register as per Annexure of Lab Chemical Stock Register. Receipt and issue shall be maintained also in ERP.
On each pack of reagents or chemicals a label shall be pasted for the date of receipt and expiry period and a separate label shall also be pasted as per Annexure of Label Specimen.
The maximum period of use of a chemical/reagent in solid form, is fixed as 3 years from the date of opening and 2 years for the liquid reagents.
The maximum period of use of an intact media, is fixed as 3 years from the date of opening.
Note: If the expiry date of the Intact material is less than 3 years (for solid & Media) & 2 years (for liquid) from the date of opening, then use it before date shall be the expiry date.
Mention the date of receipt and expiry on each pack on the day of receipt.
The opening date shall be written on the label at the time of opening of the chemical and the person who opens the pack will sign on the label.
Discard the chemical/reagent/media, if any change in physical properties like colour, odour etc is observed during the use.
Store the chemicals/reagents/media in the Chemical Storage Room of the Quality Control Lab.
