SOP FOR HOUSE KEEPING AND SAFETY IN QC LAB

  1. OBJECTIVE:

    1. To lay down the procedure for house keeping and safety in the laboratory.

  2. SCOPE

    1. This procedure is applicable for the house keeping and safety in the lab.

  3. RESPONSIBILITY:

    1. Quality Control Officer is responsible to follow procedure as per the procedure mentioned in this SOP. 

    2. QC Head is responsible for implementation and compliance of the procedure as per this SOP.

  5. PROCEDURE

    1. HOUSE KEEPING

      1. It shall be the prime responsibility of all concerned, working in the Quality Control Laboratory to keep their working place neat & clean.

      2. The lab attendant of the shift shall clean the shelves, reagent bottles and all the apparatus with water soaked clean cloth.

      3. Time shall be devoted daily by each chemist for the dusting and housekeeping of sophisticated instruments. 

      4. All the samples meant for analysis shall be kept tightly closed in their respective tray’s rather than scattered near the balance or instruments.

      5. The extra files, other relevant documents, chromatograms, graphs, registers shall not be kept out side until & unless necessary. 

      6. The waste material and paper etc. shall be disposed off in the dustbin only.

      7. All the pharmacopoeias and general books shall be kept under the control of Quality Assurance Officer. After consulting, the books shall be placed back at their respective place.

      8. The housekeeper / sweeper shall do the sweeping & mopping of floor and the area around the laboratory once in a day.

      9. The housekeeper / sweeper assigned by personnel department shall report to quality control chemist / quality control officer.

      10. The sweeping & mopping of floor shall be done at least once a day in the following sequence :-

    1. Sweeping of dust

    2. Mopping with plain water.

    3. Mopping with disinfectant mixed water.

      1. The emphasis shall be given to stain removing. If necessary for removing stains minimum quantity of recovered acetone, methanol or IPA shall be used with the prior permission of quality assurance officer.

      2. All the dustbins shall be emptied and cleaned daily by sweeper.

      3. The area around the dustbins shall be specially cleaned.

      4. After completing the job satisfactorily, the quality control officer shall check & sign in the Laboratory Cleaning Record.

    1. SAFETY

      1. This shall be the prime responsibility of all to adopt highest norms of safety.

      2. The boiling range, sulphate ash or any sort of refluxing / heating work shall be performed in well equipped fuming hood. The chemist while working must wear gloves, safety goggles & face shield. 

      3. The hazardous & corrosive chemicals shall be handled with extreme precautions like wearing safety gloves, goggles and facemask.

      4. The sharp edged, broken or cracked glassware’s or apparatus shall not be used at all.

      5. No one shall be allowed to work in laboratory without shoes or sleepers.

      6. When using pipettes, sucking shall be done only with the help of suction bulb.

      7. The transferring of chemicals or reagents to burette or small containers shall be done with the help of the funnel or suction pump.

      8. The hot plate and burner shall be used only in fuming hood after ensuring that no flammable solvent or chemical is lying inside the hood.

      9. A first-aid box containing Bandages / Dettol solution / Burnol ointment & important medicines shall be available in the company.

      10. Misuse of first-aid box by any one under any circumstances shall not be allowed. This shall be used only in case of emergency.

      11. The laboratory shall be equipped with cease – fire type fire extinguishers and a DCP type extinguisher.

      12. Under any circumstances, no chemical shall be tasted and any glassware shall not be used for eating and drinking purpose.
